2022 Packers Family Night

Another Packers Family Night in the books! This was the first opportunity for rookies and undrafted free agents to get a feel for a game-like atmosphere at Lambeau Field. Typically, thousands of loyal fans show up to watch the annual Family Night — which is really just an extensive practice open to the public. Although this year's attendance was down slightly from previous years, the announced attendance was still 50,112 fans. This number does not include the other local WI fans who tuned into their local television station to watch the practice remotely. When you take in the sheer number of fans who prioritized watching their favorite team practice, that is absolutely incredible.

"Netting" Wins

In what has become a highly-talked about tradition, the quarterbacks participated in a drill where they threw footballs into nets located in the end zone from various places on the field. This drill has been a friendly tradition amongst the quarterbacks, with Aaron Rodgers netting most of his throws. However, that was not the case this year. With three attempts each throwing into the net, Aaron Rodgers made zero. Meanwhile, Jordan Love made two of his attempts. While it is just a fun game, I am sure that besting Rodgers boosted Love's confidence. In recent weeks, Love has had some of his best practices and shown improvement in various facets of his game. After the night's practice, Coach LaFleur stated, "Jordan, it's been pretty impressive what he's been able to put together the last few practices." This is a breath of fresh air for a player who we have seen take very few meaningful snaps, outside of last season's game against Kansas City.

Highlights from Jordan Love

Samori Toure, a seventh-round receiver from Nebraska, has made some noise in recent days. Up until then, news about him and development at practice was fairly minimal. He certainly seems to be building some strong chemistry with Love, and he could be a great addition to the special teams unit.

It has been awhile since I have mentioned Juwann Winfree. In practice he has been lining up with the twos, but here he made a nice catch and move to wiggle free.

Romeo Doubs has continued to make plays. The hype around him really seems for real. I have been cautious not to overindulge in the hype, but hearing Coach LaFleur, Randall Cobb, and Aaron Rodgers endorse Doubs publicly, it is difficult not to indulge at this point. Doubs started the 11-on-11 drills working with the ones.

While working one-on-one, Doubs made a nice contested catch against cornerback Kiondre Thomas. Doubs does a great job putting himself in position and then makes a strong effort to secure the catch.

Highlights from Aaron Rodgers

WR1 vs CB1

Another catch for Romeo Doubs.

Later on while working in the red zone, Rodgers was able to throw a ball to tight end Marcedes Lewis with inside linebacker Quay Walker in close coverage. What should have likely been an interception by Walker turned into a touchdown for "Big Dog."

Quay was really tested in today's practice. Later on in practice, tight end Josiah Deguara was able to lose him in coverage and move the chains.

Wrapping up his first full week of training camp practice, receiver Sammy Watkins was able to make a nice catch against cornerback Eric Stokes.

Something to keep an eye on...

Safety Darnell Savage pulled up during a one-on-one drill while covering Amari Rodgers and walked off the field holding his hamstring. Later on in the practice, he was seen on the sidelines with a bag of ice around his thigh. After practice, Savage stated that he felt some tightness, but does not think that this injury will hamper anything going forward. 2020 seventh-round pick Vernon Scott took over for Savage and finished out the practice.

With Savage's injury and other undisclosed players having experienced muscle tightness, LaFleur decided to bypass a 4-minute live tackling drill that was sure to bring fans excitement. This would have been the first live tackling of training camp. Instead, LaFleur cut the practice 20 minutes short. That means that the families in attendance were able to experience the after-practice fireworks sooner than anticipated.

Players of the Day

2022 first-round defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt has been buried in the defensive line's depth chart, but he made a nice showing for himself. Likewise, receiver Samori Toure has been making plays in recent days. Neither player is expected to be a starter this season, but they each may be able to carve out a depth role at their respective positions.
