Training Camp: Thursday, July 28th

Updated: Jul 30, 2022

After a strong offensive practice on Wednesday, the defense had a nice showing today. From good pressure up front, to sticky coverage on receivers, to contested catches, the defense showed up today.

Rashan Gary was living in the backfield. As others have noted, he seems to be continuing good momentum from his breakout season last year.

Gary wasn't the only one getting pressure. At times, the offensive line was able to win some reps as well. All in all, a pretty balanced practice with the offensive and defensive lines. It is worth noting that the offensive line has been fluid through the first two practices.

WR1? Allen Lazard got practice started off. It certainly seems like he is rising to the occasion.

However, another receiver has been making a lot of noise through the first two practices. Continuing a strong showing throughout training camp was fourth-round pick Romeo Doubs. When he was first drafted, many thought that he would be like MVS and be the "homerun hitter" to take the top off the defense. He has shown that he is more dimensional than this and has made some really nice contested catches.

It was quite the spectacular grab. According to writer Andy Herman:

Fan favorite Danny Davis had a nice catch today as well. With the depth of the receiving corps, he is a good candidate for the practice squad — especially if he can contribute something on special teams.

By most accounts, the defense would be credited with a win today. That makes it 1-1 through the first two days of camp.

This is great news for Packers fans. Having been such a strong offensive team for much of the last decade, it is nice to hear that the defensive unit is providing a good challenge. After all, "iron sharpens iron." That begs the question: will the special teams unit do the same? The next training camp practice is on Saturday, so we will have to wait and see.
